OKLAHOMA Means Red People (Thai)

The Group Study Exchange Project of 2007-2008 “ROTARY SHARES” led by District Governor Dr. Anon Jirachawala D.3340 cooperated with DG. Mary Sherman D.5770 USA to take turns being the host, and sending a team of Businessmen and career people to live with the Rotarians’ Families, to visit the schools, livestock farms, the church, the hospital, the industries, the vocational office, and official departments. Apart from exchanging occupational experience, Group Study Exchange also acts on behalf of the ambassador for friendship. This is to directly confer this, through radio communication, newspapers for the host, communities, and to visit places to enlighten people about Thai nationality and the country.

 

There were 3 GSE were not Rotarians, but in the past they were in the selection testing system. I was the Team Leader traveling to OKLAHOMA for 4 weeks. The four of us never knew each other, beforehand we met twice at the orientation and division of duties, and communicated using the modern technology system. We departed and arrived at 3:00am on April 4, 2008; the families’ company took us to the airport to say good-bye. We flew with United Airlines and United Express for the domestic flight. We knew more about each other during the flight, and celebrated Dr. Pornthep Chupawa’s (Dr. Por) birthday over the International Time Line along with myself, Khun Natthawut Thipprasert (Khun Soo), and Pharmacist Knitha Ratananiwet (Mor Ting). Our 4 flights went from Suwanabhumi - Narita - Seattle – Denver, which took 24 hours in total. It arrived at the Will Rogers Airport in Oklahoma City at 7:00pm local time on April 4, 2008. The different time was later than Thailand by 12 hours. We were tired, fatigued, sleepy and nearly out of energy when we picked up our luggage. All of the feelings changed immediately when we came out and saw the signal from Mary Sherman (District Governor, the Rotarians’ family and GSE), who has always been in District 3340. They welcomed us with the Rotarians’ warmth and friendship, helped us carry our heavy luggage, and announced that they understood about the immediate change in the deferent cultures.

 

 

On the 1st day, Khun Pat Martin (GSE Chair) arranged for 1 night at the Hilton Garden Inn at the Oklahoma City Airport for 1 night, so that we could adjust to the different hours. However, everyone was busy calling their families and sending them e-mail. On the next day we were separated to stay with the families, and made an educational visit in response to our occupations. I visited the High school and university systems. I once joined the class at Cameron University. The Professor provided a summary from the Civil War up to the Iraq War. After completing the narration, the Professor wished to know what Thai people thought about American politics. One of the young students sitting behind me repeated “Honesty”, which reminded me to be more careful about my words, so that they would not affect the countries’ relations. I finished my answer, and the bell to end the class rang. All of my classmates came to shake hands with me and said, “Good to meet you”, before leaving quickly. We learned that the American dish is very large. We also noticed that 3 out of 10 Americans are obese. On Sunday everyone goes to church. (Who??). People shook hands and we knew lots of people. Days later people came to shake hands and give us some hugs. Most of the people gave a hug when they had already known each other. This method made Mor Ting flushed. Another lovely tradition is that the walls of every house are decorated with pictures of parents and relatives. This includes that in the office they also put a small framed picture up of the couple, and relatives on the shelf in their offices. Each time when Thai GSE attended the meeting with the host club for the presentation of Thai culture, we always saluted them and said Sawasdee Ka/Krab. Dr. Por demonstrated the “Wai” by raising both hands palm to palm and bowing down the head. We organized Rod Nam Dam Hua for the senior Rotarians at the Norman Noon Rotary Club on Songkran Day. This event was issued on the 1^st page of the Norman Script newspaper the next morning, and also printed later on in the District Governor 5770 letter. Each item that was presented concerning families and occupations made the atmosphere amusing. Everyone had lots of jokes, such as me speaking about the name “Pepsi”. I said that, “When the waiter asks me which I would like to have, Coke or Pepsi, I will never order Pepsi”. Then lots of laughter when I gave the answer to the photo,  “How can I drink my lovely dog?”. They always paid attention to the small matters. Pres. Mark Krittenbrink from the Moore Rotary Club held a welcome party at home. He asked what I wanted to have to drink? He had lots of drinks, accept for Pepsi. He also had Singha beer. “Don’t be indifferent in another person’s house, showing them Pad Thai will bring you more comfort”. It was the first family that was able to taste Pad Thai, which we could buy the ingredients for at Wall Mart, or other local shopping Malls. This news was spread throughout the region. Then Thai food was the first requested by the family when we changed families. The owner of the house prepared a Pot Luck, but only the Pad Thai ran out.  

 

 

The Cowboy City was very calm, clean and in order. Outside the city was green with wheat fields alternated with Oil Wells, cows and horses that were grazing. Spring had started with; grass flowers blooming with different colors, and the state Redbud plants fully blooming in pink. It was not crowded, and is the 18^th largest state in the US. It is mixed with Red Indians consisting of; Chickasaw, Choctaw, Cherokee, Creek, Seminole, Osage, Cheyenne, Sac and Fox, Delaware, Apache, and Pawnee. Currently no one wears Red Indian dress. It was only described in a story in the Chickasaw Indian Nation Headquarters and the Chisholm Trail Heritage Center, which were the resources of the Cowboy story. They visited the; livestock farm with Cattle and Horse Ranches, Cowboy horseback riding, the Route 66 Museum in memorial of 100 years of the state, the Oklahoma State Capital Parliament, and the National Weather Center, because they often have Tornadoes in the South of the state, which caused lots of damage to lives and residences. The officers asked me if we had an alarm when we had a Tsunami in Thailand. I was indirect saying that we had, and had also trained, but that we had installed it after the incident. This was another case that I learned about while following the weather forecast on all of the channels. When it was critical I was staying at Dr. Collin’s house. It had a rains storm and heavy rain, which caused the pine to bend and fail. There were lots of hailstones, and the power went out. The owner of the house gave me a flashlight and asked me to sit in the closet, because the window might have broken and flew into us. Two days before this incident was an emergency broadcast to Khun Spillman’s cell phone, and the car’s radio often referenced a Tornado. It was an experienced to meet several Rotarian Club members, because I got to know many veterans who have been at the base in Thailand during the Vietnam War. They were almost over 70 years old. Some of them came with old pictures to tell about the past with the real American accent. They summarized that they loved Thai food, and Thai people. There are at least 2 people for each house. It was very seldom to see public bus transportation. We had lots of convenience, because we traveled in the Rotarians’ car. Sometimes we traveled by Limo, which caused people to turn their heads. Once experiencing the family that Khun Soo was staying with, they brought him with their private plane to see the town.

 

Time passed by very quickly, and we realized that we had only about 10 days left, and that it was already the April 25-26, 2008. We attended the District Conference at the Skirvin Hotel in the heart of Oklahoma City. It was for the 3 GSE teams that have always been in France, Thailand, and GSE Thailand, to present an amusing experience. From April 4, 2008 – May 4, 2008 we had an educational visit and witnessed occupations in general at more than 50 locations in 15 Cities consisting of; Oklahoma City - Elk City - Sayre - Sulphure - Beckham -Ada - Arbuckle - Davis - Ardmore -Norman - Purcell - McClain - Duncan – Wichita –Lawton. 

 

On the date of the departure, Khun Pat Martin and the supporting family came to say good-bye at the Will Rogers Airport. I trembled when we said goodbye while we were checking in. I sent an E-mail to thank everyone when I arrived home. I still keep in touch with them, and many of them asked me to bring my family to visit and stay with them as well. If the Group Study Exchange has a private contact, then it will grow with many activities, and will lead to a long lasting friendship. This will support the Rotarians with a tangible measure for amusement that will create more of an understanding between international Rotarians.

              โครงการกลุ่มศึกษาแลกเปลี่ยน (Group Study Exchange) ในปี 2007-2008 “ ROTARY SHARES” โดย ผวภ.นพ.อานนท์ จิรชวาลา D.3340 จับคู่กับ DG. Mary Sherman D.5770 USA เพื่อผลัดกันเป็นเจ้าภาพรับและส่งทีมนักธุรกิจและวิชาชีพให้ได้ไปอาศัยอยู่กับครอบครัวของโรแทเรียน ไปเยี่ยมเยียนสถานศึกษา ฟาร์มปศุสัตว์ โบสถ์ โรงพยาบาล โรงงานอุตสาหกรรม สำนักงานทางวิชาชีพ และหน่วยงานรัฐบาลต่างๆ นอกจากกลุ่มศึกษาแลกเปลี่ยนจะได้เพิ่มพูนประสบการณ์เกี่ยวกับวิชาชีพแล้ว ยังต้องทำหน้าที่ในฐานะฑูตสันถวไมตรี (Ambassador) พบปะสนทนา ทั้งโดยตรงและผ่านสื่อวิทยุ หนังสือพิมพ์ ให้เจ้าภาพ ชุมชน สถานที่ต่างๆที่ไปเยี่ยมเยียนได้เข้าใจชาติมาตุภูมิของเราด้วย

  บุคคลที่ไม่ใช่โรแทเรียน ผ่านเข้ามาเป็น GSE 3 คน ด้วยกระบวนการสอบคัดเลือก โดยมีฉันทำหน้าที่ Team  Leader เดินทางไป เยือนรัฐ OKLAHOMA เป็นเวลา 4 สัปดาห์ เราทั้ง 4 คนไม่เคยรู้จักกันพบกันในการประชุมปฐมนิเทศและแบ่งหน้าที่เพียง 2 ครั้ง นอกนั้นติดต่อสื่อสารโดยใช้เส้นทางเทคโนโลยี และแล้ววันเดินทางก็มาถึง 3 นาฬิกาของวันที่ 4 เมษายน 2551 เราพร้อมกันที่สนามบินสุวรรณภูมิ โดยมีครอบครัวไปส่ง เดินทางโดย United Airlines และสายการบินภายใน ประเทศ United Express เราทั้ง 4 คนคุ้นเคยกันมากขึ้นบนเครื่องบิน เรา toastไวน์อวยพรวันเกิดข้ามเส้นInternational Date Line ให้ ดร.พรเทพ ชุปวา (ดร.ป๋อ)โดยมีฉัน คุณณัฐวุฒิ ทิพย์ประเสริฐ(คุณสู้) และภญ.ขนิษฐา รัตนนิเวศน์(หมอติ่ง)  ฉันลำดับเส้นทางทั้งหมด 4 ไฟล์ สุวรรณภูมิ  นาริตะ ซีเอทเติ้ล เดนเวอร์ ในที่สุดก็ถึงจุดหมายปลายทาง Will Rogers Airport  โอกลาโฮมา ซิตี้ ใช้เวลารวม 24 ชั่วโมง เวลาท้องถิ่นเกือบหนึ่งทุ่ม ของวันที่ 4 เมษายน 2551 เวลาที่อเมริกาช้ากว่าที่ประเทศไทย 12 ชม. เมื่อย เหนื่อย เพลีย ง่วง แทบหมดแรงไปรับกระเป๋าเดินทาง พอเข็นกระเป๋าออกมาก็พบว่ามีผู้ว่าการภาคหญิง Mary Sherman ครอบครัวโรแทเรียน และ GSE ที่เคยมาภาค 3340 โบกมือส่งสัญญาณพร้อมด้วยผืนป้ายต้อนรับ ความรู้สึกเปลี่ยนไปทันที อบอุ่นด้วยไมตรีจิตแห่งโรตารี ช่วยยกย้ายกระเป๋าอันแสนหนัก มีคำแนะนำซึ่งเจ้าภาพเข้าใจความเปลี่ยนแปลงกระทันหันระหว่างวัฒนธรรม

  วันแรกคุณ Pat Martin, GSE Chair จัดให้พักที่โรงแรม Hilton Garden Inn Oklahoma City Airport 1 คืน เพื่อให้เราปรับเวลา แต่ทุกคนก็สาละวนกับการโทรศัพท์กลับไปหาครอบครัว ส่ง E-Mail บ้าง รุ่งขึ้นแยกกันไปอยู่กับครอบครัว  แยกกันไปศึกษาดูงานตามสายอาชีพ ฉันได้ดูงานเชิงระบบในไฮสคูลและมหาวิทยาลัย  ครั้งหนึ่งไปนั่งเรียนใน Cameron University Professor สรุปตั้งแต่สงครามยุค Civil War เรื่อยมาจนถึง Iraq War บรรยายจบ Professor อยากรู้ว่าคนไทยคิดอย่างไรกับรัฐบาลอเมริกันในแง่ของการเมือง นักศึกษาหนุ่มคนนั่งหลังสำทับว่า Honesty ในใจตระหนักดีว่าคำพูดจากนี้ไปฉันต้องระมัดระวังไม่ให้กระทบกระเทือนความสัมพันธ์ระหว่างประเทศ ฉันตอบคำถามเสร็จ พอดีสัญญาณหมดเวลาดังขึ้นทุกคนให้ชั้นเรียนปรี่เข้ามาจับไม้จับมือ Good to meet you. แล้วก็สลายตัวไปอย่างรวดเร็ว  เราเรียนรู้ว่าอาหารอเมริกันจานใหญ่มาก และสังเกตว่าคนอเมริกัน 10 คนเป็นโรคอ้วนเสีย 3 คน วันอาทิตย์เป็นวันที่ทุกคนพากันไปโบสถ์ ได้ shake hand ทำความรู้จักผู้คนมากมาย วันต่อๆมาจึงมีคนเข้ามาทักทาย บ้างก็shake hand บ้างก็ hug ส่วนใหญ่เมื่อรู้จักแล้วจะhug วิธีนี้หมอติ่งหน้าแดงด้วยความขวยเขิน วัฒนธรรมที่น่ารักอีกอย่างหนึ่งคือทุกบ้านจะมีกรอบรูปถ่ายของพ่อแม่ พี่น้อง ลูกหลานประดับผนัง ที่สำนักงานก็เช่นกัน มีกรอบภาพเล็กๆของสามีภรรยา ลูกหลาน ตั้งบนชั้นในห้องทำงาน เมื่อใดที่ GSE ไทยร่วมประชุมกับสโมสรเจ้าภาพเพื่อ Present เรื่องเกี่ยวกับวัฒนธรรมประเทศไทย พวกเราทักทายด้วยการไหว้ กล่าวคำ สวัสดีค่ะ/ ครับ ฝ่ายดร.ป๋อ อธิบายวิธีกระพุ่มมือ ค้อมศีรษะ เราจัดพิธีรดน้ำดำหัวให้แก่โรแทเรียนอาวุโสที่สโมสรโรตารีNorman Noon เนื่องในวันสงกรานต์ เหตุการณ์นี้ลงหน้า 1 ของหนังสือพิมพ์ The Norman Scriptในเช้าวันถัดมาและลงพิมพ์ในสารผู้ว่าการภาค 5770 ในเวลาต่อมาอีกด้วย ทุกเรื่องที่เรา Present เกี่ยวกับครอบครัว และอาชีพการงาน ช่วยทำให้บรรยากาศเป็นไปอย่างสนุกสนาน ต่างคนก็ปล่อยมุขกระจาย เช่น ฉันเล่าถึงชื่อ “เป๊ปซี่”ว่า “When the waiter asks me which I would like to have, Coke or Pepsi. I will never order Pepsi” แล้วก็เฉลยภาพ “How can I drink my lovely dog?” มีเสียงหัวเราะ   ฮาตรึม พวกเขาใส่ใจกับเรื่องเล็กๆน้อยๆ เสมอ Pres.Mark Krittenbrink แห่งสโมสรโรตารีMoore จัดงานเลี้ยงต้อนรับที่บ้าน ถามฉันว่า ดื่มอะไรดี มีเครื่องดื่มหลายอย่างแต่ไม่มี Pepsi มี Singha Beer ด้วย  “อยู่บ้านท่านอย่านิ่งดูดาย ผัดไทโชว์แล้วจะสบาย” ครอบครัวแรกได้ลิ้มฝีมือผัดไท ซึ่งวัตถุดิบหาซื้อได้ตาม Wall Mart หรือ Shopping Mallอื่นๆ ในท้องถิ่น ข่าวนี้แพร่กระจายไปทั่วภาค  สัปดาห์ต่อๆมาอาหารไทยเป็นสิ่งแรกที่ request เมื่อเปลี่ยนครอบครัว  เจ้าของบ้านนัดพื่อนบ้านจัด Pot Luck มา แต่ผัดไทเท่านั้นที่ไม่เหลือ

  มาเมืองคาวบอย บ้านเมืองสงบ สะอาด เป็นระเบียบ นอกเมืองเป็นท้องทุ่งข้าวสาลีเขียวขจี มองเห็น Oil Well ขุดเจาะน้ำมันเป็นระยะๆ สลับกับฝูงวัว ม้าและเล็มหญ้า เริ่มฤดูใบไม้ผลิ ดอกหญ้าหลากสี แข่งกันบานสะพรั่ง ดอกไม้ประจำรัฐ  Redbud สีชมพูแดงบานเต็มต้น ประชาชนไม่หนาแน่น เป็นรัฐใหญ่อันดับที่ 18 ของอเมริกา ผสมผสานด้วยชาวอินเดียนแดงเผ่า Chickasaw,  Choctaw, Cherokee,Creek, Seminole,Osage,Cheyenne,Sac and Fox,Delaware, Apache and Pawnee ปัจจุบันไม่มีใครแต่งชุดเผ่าอินเดียนอีกแล้ว มีแต่เรื่องราวที่เล่าขานใน Chickasaw Indian Nation Headquarters และChisholm Trail Heritage Center เป็นที่มาของเรื่องราวของคาวบอย ได้ไปชม Cattle and Horse Ranches ฟาร์มปศุสัตว์, Rodeo การแสดงขี่ม้าผาดโผนของคาวบอย, Route 66 Museum พิพิธภัณฑ์รำลึก 100 ปีของรัฐ, Oklahoma State Capital รัฐสภาแห่งรัฐโอกลาโฮมา, The National Weather Center ศูนย์พยากรณ์อากาศแห่งชาติ เพราะว่าพายุทอร์นาโดมักเกิดขึ้นบ่อยในรัฐทางใต้ ทำความเสียหายแก่ชีวิตและที่พักอาศัย เจ้าหน้าที่ถามเราว่าเมื่อเกิดสึนามิที่ประเทศไทยมีสัญญาณเตือนภัยหรือไม่ ฉันอ้อมค้อมว่ามีแล้ว เคยซ้อมแล้ว แต่ติดตั้งหลังจากเหตุการณ์ภัยพิบัติครั้งนั้น นี่เป็นอีกเรื่องที่ได้เรียนรู้ ขณะดูรายงานอากาศ มีทุกช่องถ้าเข้าขั้นวิกฤต เมื่อพักที่บ้าน Dr.Collins พายุฝน ฟ้ากระหน่ำจนยอดสนลู่ล้ม ลูกเห็บสาดกระแทกบานกระจกเสียงดัง ไฟฟ้าดับ เจ้าบ้านรีบให้ไฟฉายแล้วให้เข้าไปนั่งในCloset เพราะกระจกจะแตกพุ่งเข้าหาคน ก่อนหน้านี้ 2 วันมี สัญญาณ beepเข้าโทรศัพท์ มือถือและทางเครื่องเสียงในรถยนต์ของคุณ Spillman เป็นระยะๆ เรื่องทอร์นาโดเข้า การได้พบปะกับโรแทเรียนหลายสโมสร ทำให้ได้รู้จักอดีตทหารหลายคนที่เคยมาประจำการที่ฐานทัพในประเทศไทยสมัยสงครามเวียตนาม อายุอานามปาเข้าไป 70 กว่า บางคนเตรียมรูปภาพเก่าๆมา เล่าเรื่องอดีตให้ฟังด้วยสำเนียงอเมริกันแท้ๆ สรุปว่าชอบอาหารไทย คนไทย การเดินทางไปไหนมาไหนทุกบ้านจะมีรถยนต์ใช้ 2 คันขึ้นไป

นานๆจะเห็นรถเมล์สักคัน แน่นอนพวกเราได้รับความสะดวก สบายโดยมีโรแทเรียนรับส่ง บางวันได้นั่งรถ Limo ทำเอาผู้คนมองจนเหลียวหลัง มีอยู่ครั้งหนึ่งครอบครัวทีคุณสู้พักอยู่ พานั่งเครื่องบินส่วนตัวชมเมือง 

  วันเวลาช่างผ่านไปรวดเร็ว กว่าจะรู้สึกว่าเหลือเวลาอยู่ 10 วันก็เป็นวันที่ 25-26 เมษายน 2008 เข้าร่วมประชุม District Conference ที่ Skirvin Hotel ใจกลาง Oklahoma City คิวของ GSE 3ทีมที่เคยไป ฝรั่งเศส ประเทศไทย และ GSE จากประเทศไทย นำเสนอภาพ เรื่องราวสนุกๆมาเล่าให้ที่ประชุม จากวันที่ 4 เมษายน 2008 จนถึงวันสุดท้าย 4 พฤษภาคม 2008 ศึกษาดูงานอาชีพและทั่วไปมากกว่า 50 แห่ง เดินทางแวะเยี่ยมเยือน 15 เมือง Oklahoma City - Elk City - Sayre - Sulphure - Beckham -Ada - Arbuckle - Davis - Ardmore -Norman - Purcell - McClain - Duncan – Wichita -Lawton
